The most wonderful time of the year....

xxx Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! xxx

Although this was a bit of a weird & not-so-happy Christmas for our family.. I figure I'd share a few of my favourite things about Christmas in general!

1. Food & Drink

Let's just cut to the chase... the reason why we all love Christmas is the overindulgence of EVERYTHING. My favourite food item at Christmas is potato stuffing... oh my goodness, it is AMAZING! Plus it's a family recipe so it is extra-scrumptious :D  And then there is the drink.. the copious amounts of drink that is consumed in Ireland over the festive season is legendary! For instance, below is my drink supply for Christmas - excluding Baileys and wine for dinner! :P

2. The Weather

This year was kind of mild in comparison to how it usually is but I like the cold and windy weather that we usually get. I love wrapping up warm at Christmas with big scarves, hats, gloves and furry boots. And I love curling up in bed with my duvet, blanket and fleecy pjs watching my favourite Christmas movies on the laptop.

3. The films

Kids films are always the best!

I'll always remember An American Tail being shown on RTE every Christmas morning for years!! Haven't seen it in yonks now though... wonder what happened to it!

4. Midnight Mass

As most people who follow this blog will know... I'm not exactly the religious kind! But there is something about midnight mass that feels somewhat special.. Going to mass late at night, everyone huddled together in the pews and the usual caroling service that is held in the church before mass. Perhaps the reason why I like midnight mass so much is the caroling service...!!

5. The Music

I love Christmas music and carols. My all time favourite Christmas carol is a not-so-well-known one. It's a song that my choir used to perform. The men would sing Silent night under us women singing Night of Silence. Quiet hard to find a good recording of it on youtube.. this is the only recording of where they sing one over the other... yet they only do one verse of Night of Silence (there is three in total if you want to check out the whole song.. it's really pretty!)

SPOTIFY Me Baby!

I tried out the music thingy called Spotify 2 weeks ago.. and I AM HOOKED! It's like a mixture of Jango and Grooveshark.. you can turn on Spotify radio to be like Jango OR you can compile playlists like on Grooveshark.

My first few playlists are basically..

• NOW chill - I subscribed to this playlist... it's pretty class!
• Bruce  - my favourite Bruce Springsteen songs all in one place!
• Just Lovely - lovely lovely chilled out songs like Skinny Love, All I Want, and Beneath Your Beautiful...awwh
• Ed Sheeran - pretty self-explanatory.. I love that ginger!

There will be more playlists!! Next is a Christmas one for sure :) 

And at the moment I am discovering the musical stylings of Ron Pope.. a friend of mine told me to check him out months ago... and thanks to Spotify, I have finally gotten around to it! Basically chilled American pop.. I'm liking it! Check him out...this is my favourite so far :D

There's nothing wrong with Bantry!! 

In relation to the sea front, there are plans to rejuvenate the sea front. The inner harbour is going to be dredged and a marina is going to be installed. There is going to be a boardwalk and new facilities all along the sea front. (If you fancy seeing the proposed development, I believe there is a model and posters in the Harbour Masters Office)

It'll take time and money, but Bantry will be even more beautiful once the Town Council are finished with it!

Thank God?

I'm a believer of science, not religion

Something popped into my head a few days ago.. I was saying "Thank God for perfume"* and I got to thinking why do we say 'Thank God' when we're grateful for things? I would say I'm agnostic bordering on atheist if I'm being honest. Ya sure, I'd go to mass most Sundays but it's not really for religious purposes. It is so that my mom doesn't have to go alone all the time. I'm a believer of science, not religion. I've taken to saying 'Thank Jebus' lately though :P

In the perfect world, instead of saying 'Thank God for...', we should be saying 'Thank [inventor] for...'. It wasn't God that made the things we are grateful for (if you want to believe he did, then carry on believing that mumbo-jumbo), but an innovative person.

So, saying all this, here is a list of who to thank next time you're going to say Thanks to!

Thursday night on the bus down from Cork to Bantry, a kid was getting sick the whole way down. The following morning, we had the same bus back up to Cork.... and it hadn't been cleaned. So it STANK of stale vomit!  Luckily I had a scarf on and a small bottle of perfume in my bag. So I doused my scarf with perfume and inhaled that the whole way up willing myself to NOT vomit....!!

THANK THE EGYPTIANS FOR PERFUME!!

Your Favourite Season

Season 5 and Season 1 are definitely my favourites! Season 1will always be up there because I fell in love with the show watching Supernatural late at night on TV3.. Supernatural was something completely new and different to other shows being aired in Ireland.

Season 5 was amazing... It had almost every character in it! So many things happened in Season 5 with the boys and Castiel. Also some of the funniest episodes of Supernatural come from Season 5, such as Changing Channels which featured in the previous Supernatural blog post. Favourite Season Finale

I really can't think of one in particular.. they are all so good! Let's go with Season 2: All Hell Breaks Loose (...LITERALLY!). Here's the recap at the start with the awesome Carry On My Wayward Son!

If you haven't watched Supernatural, you probably don't have a clue whats going on.. basically,

1. Sammy was killed.
2. Dean made a crossroad deal (i.e. a deal with the devil) to bring Sammy back to life. His part of the deal was to give his soul to the Devil after one year.
3. Dean, Bobby and Sammy figure out where the door to hell is located using Colt's train lines. 
4. The bad guys get their first and open the door.
5. The good guys arrive and close the door to prevent ALL of hell breaking loose!!

I must admit, I'm going to miss posting random hot pics/videos of the beautiful Dean Winchester... here's one for good measure!!

The last two days of the About Me Challenge... *drum roll*

Hopes, Dreams and Plans for the next 365 days

My dream is to win tonight's Euromillions! €100 million wouldn't be too bad!  Bit of a far fetched dream I know sadly!

My plan in essence is to work away where I am for a year or so..save up a few thousand! Then get my visa and flee this country! I intend on going to Australia (and yes that's where everyone is going but I have family living there for decades and it has always been my plan to go back to Australia since I visited there 12 years ago! It's not that I HAVE TO go.. I WANT to go!).. go to Sydney, crash at my aunt's place until I find some sort of job (...and hopefully get sponsorship and then residency!).

But in the meantime, I am working a full time job and just enjoying being in career-limbo :)

I stopped updating this blog challenge regularly when my home internet didn't work for a day or so... then when I got it back, I got lazy! So here's a catch up of some of the days I missed!)

Monday - Graduation!!!
Tuesday - working 10-8
Wednesday - working 10-8
Thursday - Cork & did a little shopping :)
Friday - Cork & a little more shopping and catching up with people :)
Saturday - Working 9-7, then shower and got dolled up.. had a Bulmers Berry then headed out. Went to my favourite Ma Murphy's first then to the Quays to meet up with the girls from work.Then from there went to the nighclub Cargo and bumped into 2 guys from school that I hadn't seen in over two years! So we had a lovely catch up and did a few shots of Jagameifter because there was a promotion on.. shots for €2.50! Then had a some lovely curry chips and went home and passed out from drunkeness :P

Sunday - Recovering. I was pretty shook after Saturday night! Yet in my drunkeness during Saturday night, I promised I'd go out again Sunday night! My plan was only to go for one or two while checking out Shavers Only... but yeah! We met up with a bunch of people who one of our friend's was out with, and we all ended up doing a bit of an unintentional pub crawl in Bantry! Thankfully we didn't go Cargo-ing though, don't think I would have been able! Then I got a chicken burger at some Gourmet chipper that was around for the weekend and went home and then had a very nerdy chat on Facebook that started with this picture!!

We clearly need help!

This month in detail

Week 1: Finally had the cocktail party with Marie and Suzy! Great night! Started drinking at 7pm and didn't finish til 8am the following morning! Some amazing dancing went down!!
Week 2: Started work. After initial nerves, I got back into the swing of things.. almost like I never left the place! Elsie and Daniel meant to be leaving this week so we went out for a big proper meal at Willie Pa's... I had duck, nom nom!
Week 3: More work. Elsie and Daniel didn't go last week so on my one day off we all went for a walk up the Borlin Valley and then went to Casey's Hotel in Glengarriff for food after (where I enjoyed perving on the hot rugged bar man ;) )
Week 4: Elsie left early this week. My graduation was on Monday. Then Tuesday was Mole Day! ...and the rest of the days are up in the 'Your week in detail' challenge yokey!

This year in detail

(I am far too lazy to do this in great detail! So here's a brief synopsis!)

January - May: College - final year of Chemical Engineering & fecking Design Project. Fun & games and heartbreak with Mark.

June - September: Enjoyed summer holidays with my Aunt Elsie and Uncle Daniel who were home from Australia for a few months!
September - October: Working and chilling out :) ....and the above challenge on the month in detail..

Your favourite episode

Hard to think of just one. some episodes just have amazingly funny scenes, but maybe not the whole episode is as great. Like the scenes where Dean is mocking Sam about his fear of clowns are hilarious but the rest of that episode was ok, not spectacular though! I think for my favourite, it has to be a funny episode and so I'm going with Season  Episode 8: Changing Channels. In this episode, the boys meet the Trickster who puts them into TV land.. and in order to get out of TV land they have to play the roles he gives them (including Sabrina the Teenage Witch! and a take piss intro to Supernatural!).. check it out!

Your favourite funny moment

My favourite moment is the same as my favourite Castiel scene.. Everytime I even just think about it I start grinning like mad :D

How would you get yourself into the plot, who would you be, what would you mean to the characters

Oh dear... I dream about this a lot! Currently the plan is to turn up as a half-witch (but a good half-witch) & hunter and help the boys get together what they need to perform the spell on the Demons Tablet. While trying to complete the spell, I'd be doing normal hunter stuff with the boys. And of course, Dean and I fall madly in love and have lil hunter babies :P (all Supernatural-related dreams end like that to be fair though...!)

In fairness, who could resist him! ;)

About Me Challenge

Your day in great detail

I woke up at 8am and lazed about. Started work at 10. Today I was covering breaks and lunches for first half of the day. One annoying thing of doing breaks is when someone comes back late and then in turn causes everyone elses breaks/lunches to be later than they're meant to be. This happened with 2 people today -_- I just think it's really inconsiderate to be honest. Funny thing when I was covering one person's lunch was these two old women from Cork city argued over who was going to pay for a few things.. it really reminded me of when Mrs Doyle and her friend argued over who was going to pay for tea and ended up being thrown in jail! That incident hand me smirking all day!

Then I had lunch in the canteen with one of the girls and we did our usual bitching about the general public :) Then I came back down and went on Express (my favourite) and it was weirdly busy all day. So in between serving people, 2 of the girls on Express too and I had fun complaining and making fun of people! Then home time, I had apple crumble for dinner and have been munching on Dairy Milk Caramel bars since... and now blogging!

Mole Day

The big number is known as Avogadro's constant. The number is named after Amedeo Avogadro who was a scientist from Turin. A bit of a weird looking fella...

....but anyways!

Erm... I'm not very talented to be honest. I'm good enough at music though. I play the tin whistle, flute, accordion, guitar and poor fiddle. And I'm a mediocre singer, I was in a choir! Most of the music I play is Irish traditional music, but on guitar I can play the likes of Damien Rice, Mundy, Jeff Buckley and Josh Ritter (I love his song Snow is Gone, below).

A Non-fictional book

The only non-fiction books I read really are college-related. I did Chemical & Biopharmaceutical Engineering. The book we used most was Separation Process Engineering by Wankat.

It's a book basically on how to design/analyse/optimise separation systems such as distillation and membrane processes... I'd rate it 0/5 for enjoyment but 4/5 for usefulness :P

A fictional book

'A Storm of Swords' by George R.R. Martin. 

A Storm of Swords is part of the A Song of Ice and Fire series of books. It is based in a time of bow and arrows and swords. It's a fantasy series also in that there are dragons, warlocks and Others. Mostly based in Westeros, the books centre around the Seven Kingdoms and the game of thrones played to win The Iron Throne to rule all of Westeros. In A Storm of Swords, the third installment, we see few of the contenders for the throne die and trouble bearing down on The Wall.  The Wall is an ice barrier between Westeros and the north where monster and wyldlings dwell. Only one of the contenders for the throne (and the rightful heir) realise the importance of The Wall and helps the Night's Watch.

A Song of Ice and Fire is an incredible book series, and once you open the first book, you won't stop until the last book!

First year in CIT, my flatmates and I went to see The Coronas at Cypress Avenue / The Old Oak! I always smile when I see it because we were within arm's reach The Coronas and made a lovely new friend that night :)  It's also cool that at The Coronas' Live at the Marquee gig this year they eluded to that night back 2008 saying that there was 30-odd people were there..! I was one of them :D woo!

A Recipe

I'm not great in the kitchen to be honest... yes I fail as a stereotypical woman.. There was a reason I did Tech Graph instead of Home Ec in school!! Here's a Sloppy Joes recipe from early college days! Before I got comfortable with cooking chicken, I ate a lot of minced beef!

Sloppy Joes

What you need:

• 2 pound minced beef
• diced onion
• diced celery
• crushed clove of garlic 
• can of tomato soup
• 4 tbsp brown sugar
• 2 tsp Worcestershire
• 1/4 tsp salt
• 8 burger buns
• Add a finely chopped pepper if you like it spicy!!

What you do:

1. Fry the minced beef until completely browned. 
2. Add onion, garlic and celery, let fry for 5 mins over medium heat. [Add pepper here if you want them]
3. Stir in can of tomato soup, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce into pan. Season with salt. (You can add more salt if you want, say 1/2 tsp, I'm just not a fan of salt!). Simmer over low heat until cooked thoroughly. 
4. Spoon into toasted burger buns.. 
5. I like cheese so melt some on the burger if you fancy :)

My Favourite Pairing

My favourite paring could be either Dean and Cas or Dean and Bobby… you’ve probably noticed the common factor here, anything with Dean is good! Since I haven’t mentioned Bobby yet… Let’s go for Dean and Bobby. When John Winchester died, Bobby pretty much took over as a father figure to the boys (some would say he was always the father figure!). Sam and Dean are basically Bobby’s weak spot, he cares about the boys. Bobby is an aging hunter who is world weary. He’s sarcastic, brutally honest and he saves the boys’ asses more often than not. In my opinion he is basically an older version of Dean! When Sam was MIA for whatever reason, Bobby picked up the slack to replace Sam.

These two scenes simply show how much they care for each other. As he says, "Family don't end with blood, boy!"

About Me Challenge

A Good Book 

There are a good few that come to mind. The last book I’ve finished is brilliant. It’s called ‘A Storm of Swords’ by George R. R. Martin. It is part of the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ book series (the books behind the ‘Game of Thrones’ tv series on HBO). ‘A Storm of Swords’ is the 3^rd installment in the series and, so far, the best! 

This book definitely gets a 5/5 from me! Granted you have to read the previous two books to figure out what in seven hells is happening!
